Would You Like Some Work-Life Balance?

Are you stressed, working long hours and neglecting your health and relationships?  If so you're probably on the look-out for some work-life balance...

But what is work-life balance (WLB) anyway?  So many of us are on the hunt to find this golden egg but interestingly most people have never stopped to think about what the term really means to them.  And if you don't know what it really means how will you ever find it?...

Start Looking

After 14 years in investment banking, professional services and recruitment I thought I knew a thing or two about working my socks off. However the alarming reality is that to some people such lawyers the hours I used to work are considered a walk in the park!

So here's my point - what constitutes WLB to me may be very different to your definition.  There isn't a clear set of guidelines that define this illusive term so it's important to be clear on your own boundaries before someone else's are imposed on you i.e. your boss's!

The first step in securing WLB is to understand your own personal definition of the term.  So grab a
pen and paper now and answer this simple question: -
  • What does work-life balance look like to you?
Consider: -
  • What hours are you happy to work & how many days?
  • How far are you willing to travel to get to work?
  • How much time do you want to spend with your family?
  • How often do you want to exercise?
  • What other activities do you want to factor into your life?

Think about what's important to you and incorporate those areas into your own personal definition.  At the end of this exercise you should be crystal clear on your WLB boundaries.
